First promoting clip of our Conference during III International Student Orthopedic Conference in Łódź:
The history of Student Orthopedic Conferences is dated for year 2017 and took place in Gdańsk. One year later, in 2018, Conference took place in Szczecin. In 2019 Conference „All For Sports” happend in Łódź. This year we are back in Gdańsk!
But how does it start?
The Student Scientific Circle at the Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Gdańsk would like to proudly announce that it will be hosting the IV International Student Orthopaedic Conference on the 19th-20th September 2020. The conference will take place on the occasion of the 43rd Convention of the Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (16th-19th September 2020). It is going to be the fourth meeting of its kind in Pomerania, while our Scientific Circle is privileged to host the International Student Orthopaedic Conference for the second time.
The beginnings of the development of orthopaedics at the Akademia Lekarska in Gdańsk date back to the 5th July 1945, when the Department of Surgery and Children’s Orthopaedics was formed. In 1946, Henryk Cetkowski organised the Convention of Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Gdynia. The topics addressed at the VII Convention concerned the most relevant issues at that time, mainly the treatment of tuberculosis of the hip as well as war trauma. Another event that led to advances in Orthopaedics in the Pomerania was the formation of the Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics in Gdańsk in 1953, as well as the organisation of the XIII Convention of the Society in 1959 (hosted by prof. Alfons Senger). In 1976, prof. Antoni Hlavaty organised the XXI Convention of the Society. A few years later, prof. Józef Szczekot held the memorable XXIX Convention of the Society. The dynamic development of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Gdańsk, as well as of orthopaedics as a specialty itself in Pomerania, were two key features that inspired prof. Tomasz Mazurek to organise the 43rd Convention of the Society in 2020.
The vigorous functioning and development of the Department and Clinic became a great motivation but also an opportunity to improve practical skills as well as gather theoretical knowledge for all students interested in the topic. Thus, it was only a matter of time before the Student Scientific Circle was created. The history of the our Circle dates back to 1980s, while currently we are one of the most active orthopaedic scientific circles in Poland. Annually, members of our circle present a number of scientific papers at various Polish and International conferences. The advancement and progress of our knowledge and skills would not be possible without the remarkable specialists working in the Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Gdańsk. Among many that support our Scientific Circle are:
Professor Tomasz Mazurek, M.D., Ph.D. - The Head of the Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, The Chairman-Elect of Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, The Chairman of Polish Society of Hand Surgery (2015-2017), The Deputy Editor of ’’Surgery of the Locomotive Organ and Polish Orthopaedics”, The Editor of the orthopaedic textbook for students Ortopedia i Traumatologia - podręcznik dla studentów.
Filip Dąbrowski, M.D., Ph.D. - The Tutor of Student Scientific Circle at the Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Medical University of Gdańsk (since 2017), The Secretary of Polish Society of Hand Surgery, The Treasurer of Polish Society of Hand Surgery (2017-2019).
During the Conference we would like to address the most relevant problems and topics focused on orthopaedics and traumatology. On the first day we are planning to conduct oral sessions, whereas on the second day we would like to arrange workshops, including a microsurgery course and practical classes with artificial bones.
We strongly believe that despite the very demanding task that we face, we shall succeed and meet the requirements of all participants. The charm of Gdańsk; its magnificent architecture, monuments, landmarks and the Baltic Sea will certainly aid us and undoubtedly leave an unforgettable impressions on all our guests.
We warmly invite you to Gdańsk.
